Frequently Asked Questions

Hindi has three main tenses (kaal): Vartaman kaal (present / वर्तमान काल), Bhootkaal (past / भूतकाल) and Bhavishyat kaal (future / भविष्यत् काल). Each main tense is further divided into sub-tenses such as simple, continuous and perfect.
Kaal (काल) means "tense" — it tells the time of an action: whether it happens in the present, happened in the past, or will happen in the future. It is a core topic of Hindi vyakaran (grammar).
Present tense commonly uses हूँ / है / हैं / हो; past tense uses था / थी / थे; and future tense uses verb endings like -गा / -गी / -गे. The helping verb agrees with the gender and number of the subject.
Look at the helping verb and verb ending. "है/हैं" signals present, "था/थे" signals past, and "-गा/-गे" signals future. The presence of "रहा/रही/रहे" indicates a continuous action.
